If a tree falls… 2017_
The work based on the famous question:
"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"
Our lifestyle often indirectly but not consciously leads to the disappearance of natural values and the loss of biodiversity. It is extremely difficult for human beings to perceive these ongoing destructions. Through the intimisation of the jewel and the actual destruction of its natural parts, I make the wearer to understand that.
The work consist of two parts: brooches and VR experience.
The jewels are made of rigid sintered aluminium and extremely fragile pine resin.
Each brooch is different from the other, but if matched an imagined landscape appears.
A landscape that contains all the diversity of living beings in nature.
It can be easily broken while getting in contact with it, and besides it also has a particular beauty of decay compared the grief of loss.
The VR experience let us walk in the field, the space of the brooch. While discovering we perceive the total destruction, besides we are unable to prevent it happen. We experience a different perspective.
Along the painfulness of the project, I offer courage through Spinoza’s words - that is collectable through the VR experience
„The more (s)he seeks and is able to search for his/her usefulness,
in other words: to preserve its existence, the more virtues it has;
on the other hand, those who ignore their own use are weak.” - Spinoza
The aim of the project was how to attach immersive experience through jewelry to encourage conscious actions. I think experience can cause great changes.
I made If a tree falls... - as my diploma project - as a reminder for myself. I was always impressed by how a jewel can be intimised by its wearer, and it’s loss how painful can be. These objects are capable to be attached emotionally on a high level.
